In 2009, Emi Koch founded Beyond the Surface International in support of the unlikely surfers. Emi's goal was to establish a global network for surfing organizations and initiatives for the young people coming from conflicts zones, impoverished villages, "the streets" or challenging backgrounds who have taken to surfing as a tool for self-expression, freedom, and fun. Beyond the Surface International's mission is to ensure that nothing will hinder their talents, passions, and skills.

Emi is a recent Georgetown University graduate in Psychology with focuses in Anthropology and Justice and Peace Studies. Her life goal is to ensure that no child grows up feeling insignificant or excluded from global dialogues and to create safespaces (virtual and physical) for self-expression to be nutured and encouraged.

Emi also likes papayas and the occassional epic sweater.
